Kukkia and Vilkas


KUKKIA AND VILKAS (2005) by XS Labs.

HINT: Expressive and behavioral sculpture.

"Kukkia is an expressive and behavioral kinetic sculpture that develops a visceral relationship with the wearer. The Kukkia flowers frame the face and slowly open and close over time, like a caress. The felt and silk petals provide relative rigidity and integrate stitched Nitinol (a shape memory alloy) wire, which enables the slow, organic movement."*

Cell


CELL by Yvonne Laurysen and Erik Mantel for LAMA Concept (Amsterdam).

HINT: Alternative method of fabricating carpets.

"Unlike conventional carpets, Cell is not produced with a loom, knitting machine, tufting technique, or textile printing. Cell carpet is made of 100 percent industrial wool felt that is pressed and cut into strips. Wool felt is a natural product that is nonflammable, water repellent, breathable, and acoustically absorptive. Cell strips are offered in thirty-two colors, and individual strips may be ordered as replacements. Cell carpet is also offered with integrated LED lights as well as light reflecting Swarovski stones."*

"Silver Birch" by Helen Suzanne Alexander

HINT: Wonderful optical illusion by handmade dissolved fabric.

Handmade woollen felt for this piece is mounted on a double layer of two-tone organza. "Successive layers of threads and heat dissolving fabric were applied with needle felting and then burned back beofore the next layer was added. There is no stitching to this piece apart from the few surface embroidered lines to indicate horizontal marks in the brak."*
